How do I use the calculator?

For pediatrics you can use their weight in pounds or in kilograms.  Their age is also referenced, and this was based on the CDC growth chart: if the child appears to be of average build and all you know is their age, you can use that column based on age. For adults you use their weight in pounds or kilograms. Once you choose the correct weight or age, you align that in the upper window and the calculations show up below.  

Why are the items in this order on the calculator?

The calculator is set up in the order that decisions are made for Rapid Sequence Intubation. Typically you evaluate the patient's size, then choose the ETT size and consider depth of placement, the medications for sedation and paralysis, and then address pain, bradycardia and management of blood pressure and maintenance of sedation.  For pediatrics this calculator also gives you the 4-2-1 calculation for maintenance fluids and the ranges of normal systolic blood pressure and pulse for your patient.

Are all the drug doses weight based?

 No. Phenylephrine, nicardipine, labetalol and hydrazine are not dosed based on weight. The calculations for these drugs are provided. 

Can I dose ketamine for pain control?

Yes. The adult sedation dose is 1.5 mg/kg and that is what the RSI Calculator dosing is based on. Adult dosing for pain is 0.2 -0.8 mg/kg so you can use 1/4 to 1/2 the sedation dose.

How do I clean the slide calculator? 

The manufacturer recommends using a "Lysol" or similar disinfectant wipe, using light rubbing and a quick buff dry. Doing this too often or with too much product can damage the varnish. Do not use a solvent based cleaner. DO NOT USE AN ALCOHOL SWAB OR ALCOHOL BASED CLEANER. 

What is the highest patient weight included on the calculator?

The top weight on the pediatric side is 40 kg (88 pounds) and the top adult weight is 160 kg (352 pounds). 

What about pricing and shipping? When will I get my calculator?

Pricing is $15 each. If you buy 10 of them, the price is $135 so you are getting 10 for the price of 9. If you buy 25 of them, the price is $330 so you are getting 25 for the price of 22. Shipping is free on all orders. The order will be filled the next day and should be to you in 2 - 5 business days.
